Couple’s therapy also known as Marriage Therapy, Marital Therapy, Relationship Therapy or Relationship Counselling
Regain a sense of strong emotional connection, trust, intimacy and love with your partner
Couples therapy provides two people involved in a romantic relationship with the opportunity to gain insight into their relationship, explore and resolve conflict and improve relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions. Couples have many different reasons for attending therapy, a few of them include- feeling as though their relationship is in survival mode or at a standstill, recovering from infidelity and often times being so worn down by relationship tension and conflict that feeling connected and fulfilled together seems like a distant memory.
Other times, couples seek therapy to reconnect and rediscover a relationship which has changed with time, to learn more effective ways to communicate and to gain better insight about their partner and the dynamics of their relationship.
Whether the focus is on the small issues or dealing with potentially relationship-breaking challenges, therapy can help each of you feel valued, heard, and connected.
Therapy is offered both in-person or online.
Some common areas of concern that bring couples to therapy include:
- Lack of trust or jealousy in the relationship
- Betrayal, infidelity and affair in the relationship
- Lack of communication
- Financial issues
- Work related stress
- Abusive behaviour
- Different sexual needs or other sexual issues
- Family conflicts
- Difference between partners and resolution of conflict
- Different parenting styles
- Controlling behaviour
- Significant changes in life circumstances
- Dealing with miscarriage or the inability to fall pregnant
How does couples therapy work?
When working with a couple, I see each partner individually before starting joint sessions. During this session we will assess the pain points in your relationship from each partner’s perspective.
Once each partner feels heard, and the hindrances to a joint process have been addressed, we create a joint therapeutic space. This is a space where we will work on strategies that will help you deepen your bond and overcome the challenges that you are facing in your relationship.
Does couples counselling actually work?
Couples therapy can you help improve your relationship, but it requires both parties to be honest, open and motivated. Many couples often take a reactive – rather than proactive – approach and come in after they have experienced a crisis or fallen into a deep relational rut. I encourage you to reach out for support as early as possible. As mentioned above, marriage or couples counselling can be both preventative and healing.
