Individual Therapy

Individual therapy

“Our wounds are often the openings into the best and most beautiful part of us.”
― David Richo

Individual therapy, also known as individual psychotherapy or individual counselling, is one-on-one therapy between client and psychologist. It is a collaborative process in which both client and therapist commit to the journey. The purpose of individual therapy is to provide support, guidance, and a confidential space for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and challenges. The therapist utilizes various therapeutic approaches to help the client gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, and address emotional and psychological difficulties in a personalized and focused manner.

Therapy is offered both in-person or online.

What to expect at the first session?

The process typically begins with obtaining informed consent and me getting to know you. I will conduct an initial assessment by gathering information about your background, current concerns, and your goals for therapy. Based on this assessment, we will develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. The initial session is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions about my approach or the process and see if you feel comfortable working with me.

What happens during therapy?

The therapist creates a safe and confidential space for the client to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The focus is on gaining insights into the client’s inner world, relationships, and challenges. Therapeutic techniques and strategies are employed to address emotional and psychological difficulties, promote personal growth, and develop coping skills. The therapist helps the client build tolerance for uncomfortable emotions and fosters a sense of resilience and strength within them. Overall, individual therapy aims to support the client in achieving greater self-awareness, healing, and positive life changes.

How to make the most out of therapy?

To make the most of therapy, be open and honest during your therapy sessions, setting clear goals for what you want to achieve. Build trust in the therapeutic relationship and attend sessions regularly. Be patient with the process as growth takes time and engage in any homework or exercises provided. Embrace vulnerability and practice self-reflection outside of sessions. Give feedback to improve the therapy experience and be kind to yourself throughout the journey. By actively participating and committing to the process, you can achieve positive change and personal growth through therapy.

What is the duration of each session and how many sessions do I need to attend?

Each session is approximately 55 minutes in length. The overall duration of therapy varies for each individual and depends on the complexity and the needs of each individual. As a start, I recommend 4-6 sessions to find benefit in psychotherapy. Therapy may be short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or long-term for more complex or ongoing challenges. We will discuss this and work together to map out a plan that best suits your needs.
